Do same-sex parents cause the increased incidence of social problems their children experience?

A recent study by Dr. Mark Regnerus of the University of Texas at Austin was published in the Journal of Social Science Research. In this study, the largest of its kind, children raised by homosexual parents are found to be significantly more likely than those raised by married heterosexual parents to suffer from social problems. Among the many problems are strong tendencies, as adults, to show poor impulse control, suffer from depression and thoughts of suicide, need mental health therapy, choose cohabitation over marriage, be unfaithful to partners, contract sexually transmitted diseases, be sexually molested, have lower income levels, drink to get drunk, and smoke tobacco and marijuana. It was also found that children raised by parents who had same-sex relationships were more likely to identify themselves as homosexuals, which some would not consider a problem.

It is shown in the study that previous studies indicating no differences in outcome between same-sex and opposite sex partners used biased sampling methods on small sample sizes. This study deals with the experiences of randomly selected children after they have grown up, rather than the statements of a few self-selected gay parents.

Update:

To give you an idea of the difference, here is a comparison between currently intact bio mother and father (IBF) and those raised by a Lesbian mother.

Ever touched sexually by parent or adult caregiver. IBF 2%. LM 23%

Forced to sex against will. IBF 8%. LM 31%

Recently or currently in therapy. IBF 8%. LM 19%

Currently unemployed. IBF 8%. LM 28%

Currently on public assistance. IBF 10%. LM 38%

Currently cohabitating. IBF 9%. LM 24%

Average number of male sex partners (among men) IBF 0.2. LM 1.48

Average number of female sex partners (among women). IBF 0.22 LM 1.04

Identifies as entirely heterosexual. IBF 90%. LM 61%

A logistic regression analysis found that all these differences were statistically significant even after controlled for "age, gender, race/ethnicity, level of mother’s education, perceived household income while growing up, experience being bullied as a youth, and state’s legislative gay-friendliness." In other words, the data does not support a

Update 2:

In other words, the data does not support a theory that society or "bullying" was responsible. Those quick to give an opinion would do well to read the article.

Update 3:

Good point Penny Lane about the pathetic knee jerk reaction by those who don’t read the report but discard it anyway. You can believe what you want if you close your mind to everything else.

Interesting story, Disneys Mickey.

Update 4:

Jim and T68, I think you believe as I do that it is strange that people like me get bullied for suggesting that it may not be bullies and society responsible for bad outcomes from same-sex parents. I say I’m bullied, for what else would you say about taunts like “hateful, intolerant bigots such as yourself,” “lies make the baby Jesus cry,” it is because of “homophobic bigotry,” “I’m sure they would be just fine if you would tone down the bullying. Maybe we should make bigotry illegal instead,” “caused by the people discriminating against them. This is kind of a duh question kiddo.”

Yes. Social science freed from the straitjacket of political correctness, usually gets to the truth sooner or later.

Previous studies had used deliberately selected college-educated lesbians and compared them with a random population of married people. In other words, they cooked the data to fit their preconceptions about marriage.

Regnerus used a very large random sample, with about 15,000 interviews, and he found that on 25 of 40 indicators, the children in the custody of lesbians did worse than average. There was no data on homosexual men because not a single case of two MSM with custody of children was found in the entire sample. They only exist in the imagination of liberals.

Now its everyone elses fault and no one on here actually read your little paragraph.

Come on people. Why would the way society treats gay people have any affect on a straight CHILD of gay parents? People dont really ask about other's parents.

You're all seriously reaching now. You have a first sample of a few "self-selected" gay parents showing everything is ok and are so quick to rub it in everyone faces. And then a few years go by and actual children of gay parents, not "Self selected" are studied and it shows a much more detailed and unbiased report.

Your knee-jerk reaction that its the bigotry that causes the problem is just.... pathetic. Seriously.

Sorry, not going to take the time to look at the numbers in the study but I'd be interested to know exactly how much more likely these children are to be susceptible to these "social problems".

I'd also imagine since gay parents have an obvious tendency to be more liberal that some things like drug abuse (ie marijuana) might not have been drilled into their heads as wrong. I'm not saying Marijuana usage is wrong, but growing up in households where sex is a liberal thing, along with things like relaxed pro-drug stances could be the cause of their increased risk?

No, I'm not discrediting the fact that they might have been bullied or experienced a traumatic childhood because of their surroundings, but it's just interesting thought.

    Interesting to see the correlations.

It's tough to be raised by same-sex parents with you and yours out there. I'm sure they would be just fine if you would tone down the bullying. Maybe we should make bigotry illegal instead, if we're only concerned about the health of the children.

The parents don't cause it, it's the society's viewpoint and treatment of homosexuality that causes the problems. That little tidbit seems to have been ignore in the study you referenced. Perhaps you noticed that?

The only increase that those children have in social problems is due to prejudice that people show them. I doubt the study is accurate.

People suffer from such things because of homophobic bigotry. If a homophobe hears that somebody, perhaps in his high school, was raised by gays and lesbians, there's a good chance that person is going to harass him/her. Harassment leads to depression and mental issues. It has little to do with the homosexual parents themselves.

The answer to your question is an unequivocal yes. It has been proven over and over, only to be covered over by those who want the benefits of a family unit, yet not in conventional & obvious biological format. (see corroborating resource below)

Listen to what two teenage boys said in an article by Ted Rall in the News & Review

"The boss of a small consulting firm where I worked a few years ago was the parent of two teenage boys. She'd divorced and moved in with her lover, another woman. To all outward appearances, the kids had adjusted smashingly."

"One afternoon, however, the two boys were hanging out in my office, checking out my collection of plastic dinosaurs while they waited for their mom to finish her conference call. "I can't wait to go away to college" the older of the two said. He was 15. "I really like mom's friend Janet, " he went on, "but it's weird having two moms and no dad. I'd rather have no family at all than a family that's not normal." His younger brother nodded in agreement. "

I think the voice of children should be heard, not coerced into that which violates their soul and conscience.

I don't think the gender of the parents should matter. The only reason it does is because people are so unaccepting to the idea. It makes me sick thy society has not evolved past homophobia.

No surprise that words such as "bigot", "homophobes", "hate-mongers", etc., are tossed around in reaction to such a study. It's too bad that we need studies to document the obvious, only to still have the obvious rejected. Reminds me of a study done several years ago that found that there are inherent differences between men and women. What uneducated, backwoods hillbillies always have known to be true has to be researched and documented in order for the brainwashed victims of modernity to believe it can be true. But still they refuse to believe, choosing instead that they can invent their own reality.

Also reminds me of something from Romans 1, "For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God, or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools."

Thanks for the wake-up call, even though it didn't wake anybody up..
