Is it possible to hire a limited power of attorney for my son who is using a public defender.?

My son has a public defender to represent him in a robbery case and he is in jail. I don't think public defenders are good but we all can't afford an attorney for him. I want to know that the public defender is doing everything he can possibly do for my son. Is it possible to hire a limited power of attorney and how much can they do?

Update:

I know it is a document. I guess what I was trying to say was hire someone to act as the person since his case his handled by a public defender and they are so unreliable even at talking to a client in jail such as my son. I needed to know what kind of power a person could have on his behalf.

A limited power of attorney is not a person. It is a document in which a person can't some limited power to act on his behalf to another party. For example - if your son was selling his home, but was out of the country, he could give you power of attorney to sign the documents for him.

What is it you are trying to accomplish?
