Can I replace my old computers IDE drive with a SATA drive?

I've got an older Dell (Optiplex G200) that I use to run Ubuntu Linux. I'm running an older version and want to upgrade, but the latest versions won't install because I don't enough disk space. I'm looking to install a big drive (terabyte?) but the large drives are all SATA and my system is currently IDE.

Is upgrading as simple as plugging in a SATA controler card, plugging in the drive, and installing the software, or is it going to be more involved than that?

Ya, I think you've got it right. Once you've installed the drive, there are a couple ways you could use it.

    1. Format to ext4 and Migrate you /home directory over to it. You'll probably want to use rsync in archive mode, and update your fstab afterwards.

(/home is the directly that tends to be the largest as you gather multimedia.)

    2. Use a disk imaging program like clonezilla to copy the old drive onto the new, and then extend the partition to fill the whole disk (vi a live CD)

I would double check to make sure the controller chipset is linux compatible

reported to work in the AHCI mode.

it might have been an hassle-free answer in case you have given your mom Board sort quantity or you computing device sort No. human beings have moved to SATA yet there could be atleast one IDE port for connecting the CD/DVD ROM's and Writers's. Becuase the CD/DVD Drives are nonetheless IDE Interface. and that i havent seen a SATA CD/DVDpersistent yet. The Smaller IDE Like port you're speaking approximately ought to be the Mouse Connector. i'm optimistic you have a single IDE port someplace on your mom board. Else in case you desire to apply your outdated DVDpersistent circulate to a working laptop or computing device save and purchase a USB casing on your DVDpersistent. connect thepersistent in the casing and connect the casing to the USB Port. i'm optimistic you have some un used USB Ports. in case you nonetheless choose help get lower back to me.
