Why are there no atheist presidents?

I was looking at past presidents and it turns out most of them are either Catholic or Protestant! Why have there not been presidents from other faiths/lack of faith?

There has only been one Catholic President. All other Presidents have been Protestants.

The number one reason why there have been no Atheist Presidents is that few, if any, qualified Atheists have ever run for President.

It is currently unknown whether people of faith would vote for an Atheist for President because they have never really been given the choice.

    With love in Christ.

I'm making a bet that there is already been an atheist president and potentially a homosexual one. These are presidents who both had no affiliations or had in which rumored to be atheists. Presidents Who Were Not Members Of Any Church William Henry Harrison Andrew Johnson Ulysses Simpson Grant Rutherford Richard Hayes Presidents Whose Religious Views Are Doubtful James Madison James Monroe Martin Van Buren John Tyler Zachary Taylor Chester Alan Arthur Thomas Jefferson, Freethinker Abraham Lincoln, Deist And Admirer Of Thomas Paine additionally rumored to be homosexual. (see log cabin republicans) As for whilst a overtly homosexual president or an atheist might be elected I'd be hedging my bets on a homosexual president so long as he is a bible thumper as a good as a @#$@ thumper. The substantial majority of the proper wing are deeply devout and a minority of the left are devout. Non-faith is a greater taboo then being homosexual to them.

The only Catholic President was Kennedy. The rest are up to opinion. Jefferson was not a Protestant. Atheist philosophy denys the existence of God, I doubt anyone could get elected on that platform given the proliferation of religions in the US that include a God (Judiasm, Christianity, Islam). If you want to get an atheist elected, then you should go about proving the non-existence of God.

actually, the presidents you named were most likely deists.

And to answer the question, why do all politicians do anything at all? To get elected. Maybe some were atheist, but to appeal to the dominant Christian faith in the country, they probably said they were Christian to get votes.

Many founding fathers were atheists. People use religion as a way to depict being a good person even though being religious is not synonymous with being a good person. There are even 7 states where you can't run for public office if you are an atheist. It's stupid - on the whole the intelligence of people I've met who are atheists has been higher than that of Christians.

Because they wouldn't get voted in any more than a Hindu or Muslim or Buddhist would at this point. Only a few, perhaps only one JFK, was even a non-protestant.

The answer ia obvious - the country has not yet wished to elect an atheist president.

There have been several (they've already been named here) who were likely atheist, agnostic, or deist. John Adams and I think a few others (Taft?) were Unitarian, which accepts all religions.

My theory is these men lied about being religious because they knew few people would vote for an atheist/agnostic/deist president.

Well most of it stems from Americans' distrust of atheists in general. This article is actually exaactly what you're looking for:

George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, TJ, Benjamin Franklin... etc. they were all atheists.

    and many others.

but they would've lost people's credit if they revealed their view on religion.

so they didn't tell the public but many were atheists.

even today, Christianity is the dominant religion. if any former presidents said he's an Atheist, he wouldn't have been elected.

edit: by the way, there are clear evidence that those presidents were atheists. you can google it
