Car air compressor, Toyota Tacoma?
My car squeals whenever I turn on the air conditioning. A friend told me that the clutch and the bearings are shot inside of the compressor. I was wondering what the clutch in the air compressor does, how it works, and if I can fix it without buying a new compressor.

It could be bad bearings or it could also be as simple as a loose belt.
The compressor clutch works like that of a transmissions' clutch (for manual transmissions): separating it from the engine. The compressor's pulley however will always move (transmissions eventually slow down when disengaged). What's happens is the compressor clutch, disengaged, will let the pulley move, but won't operate the compressor at all. Turn on the A/C, the compressor clutch engages, and the compressor will begin to operate (again, like a manual transmission, you put into gear, let out the clutch, and the car will move because the transmission starts operating).
As for fixing it (assuming it is compressor related and not a loose belt) I would look around in auto part stores, as well as online for a compressor clutch. If you can't find one, than go to Partsgeek.com (I can get a whole new compressor for my car priced at $130 for the cheapest)

It's more than likely the fan belt being worn creating the noise then the bearings. Check your fan belt first.
