Is it legal to park on a single lane one-way street?

Long story short, my neighbor keeps parking his large truck halfway into this teeny tiny single lane, one way street that goes through the back of our houses, and several others, for residents to park their cars. I can't back out of my driveway when his truck is there because it's halfway into this tiny street and I'm going to hit it. I've asked him 3 times to not park there because I'm fairly sure it's not legal, but before I ask him again or even call the police, I need to be certain.

To paint a mental image: There is this long small single lane one-way street. On each side of it there are driveways to houses. People back out of their driveways into the street, and go in the direction of the street to get out of our suburbs. This guy parks it next to his driveway (because it's full of other cars), halfway into the street. My driveway is right where he parks it, so when I try to back out I can't unless I'm in my smallest car which barley makes it through. I have larger trucks that I need to go to work in every morning but his car is always there.

So my question, is it legal to park in a single lane one way street that cars are supposed to back into?

If he is causing an obstruction or part obstruction, then I would involve the police, especially as you have already asked him to be more considerate. You are entitled to have full access to your own driveway. It is extremely selfish of him to do this.

A similar problem occurred locally in a nearby narrow cul-de-sac, when a 30 cwt van ( owned by someone who lived in the area some way away) was parked and prevented a removal pantechnicon from accessing the house being vacated. The police were called and the van was required to be moved ,never to return.

Obstruction is illegal and no-one has the right to prevent lawful passage or access to or from a property.

Don't know what country this question refers to, but in general neighbours are people you have to live alongside so if a mutual solution can be worked out between you so much the better. Then again some people are just ignorant a++eholes ands you need ot get the authorities involved.

You say everybody backs out of their drives, this is illegal in the UK as you should never reverse from a minor road onto a major one ( in this case a drive is minor to a back alley). Have you tried reversing INTO your drive and then driving OUT. Far easier than people think

It's defintetely legal as long as you've a broken yellow line. I've handed a number of cars at a time before on a broken yellow line. It is of course unlawful to pace, but you recognize that. So long as you keep around the speed restrict, and it is a broken yellow line for your aspect, then you can pass as many automobiles as you need at a time.

This fellow is being inconsiderate. I would suggest that, to keep the peace, you ask him ,politely, first and failing this, involve the police. You might find that there is a local bye law which prohibits the parking of trucks on the road, at night.

    UK answer -

does not matter if it is single lane, one way or two if it is a road then it is unlawful to obstruct the road.

See The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 - http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1986/1078/regul...

    from which I quote -

"103. No person in charge of a motor vehicle or trailer shall cause or permit the vehicle to stand on a road so as to cause any unnecessary obstruction of the road"

Source(s): The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986

There are rules about parking large commercial vehicles in residential areas - you need to get onto your local council about this one. You complain about a commercial vehicle operator using the road as a depot, obstruction. But then I got confused cos you say you need to get trucks out and his car is blocking access -- whats the problem, his car or his truck ? You may both be breaking local laws on transport operators vehicles.

Generally quite legal unless there are signs at the road side of paint on the road to indicate otherwise.

As long as you mean a single carriageway road (two lanes of opposing traffic direction). Obviously it wouldn't be a great idea to park along a single track road regardless of whether it was one way or not.

City / street parking regulations are numerous...Maybe checking with the local police would be help full but regardless, common good sense and courtesy are in short supply these days - if he continues, report it to the cops

Hard to say, call the police and let them sort it out.
