Why are abortions legal but not assisted suicide?

Bit of a deep question but after watching a documentary it got me thinking. Why is it legal for doctors/ nurses to terminate a baby who has no say compared to a terminally ill/ extremely disabled person who wants to end their life? Why is self suicide through lethal injections (which doctors would need to give) not something that is it legal? I understand there should be a long court process to examine each case but is it not fair to force someone to live in such pain/mental torture? Why are abortions legal but not assisted suicide? Why are people not allowed that choice compared to babies who have none? Just all seems slightly odd and unfair.

Great question! I think it probably has more to do with insurance law than anything else. From an ethical standpoint, the reason might be that some family members would try to find a way to get rid of someone in their family and gain their inheritance. Even so, these things could be worked out legally. Under certain exceptional conditionals with a signed release and credible witnesses, it sounds possible.

I am generally opposed to abortion (except under certain extreme circumstances), but I agree with the logic of your argument. If abortion is legal, then why not assisted suicide? I agree that there is probably less reason to excuse the termination of an innocent baby than there is to assist an adult of sound mind in the termination of his/her life.

If someone is going to mess around with deciding when it is ok to terminate the life of someone else, the line has already been crossed.

It is not legal to terminate a baby. That would be murder.

It is legal to terminate an embryo or a fetus, both of which are living inside of the uterus of a conscious living human being.

As far as suicide. Where we can easily say what the health benefits are from abortion, and list numerous solid reasons why it should stay legal for everyone, the same can't always be done with suicide.

There's also the worry that we may start euthanizing people who simply need help, or we may get rid of aids because it's so much cheaper if people just consent to being euthanized than to give them the money they need to get better, or to care for themselves, etc.

Though for the most part, I think it's just ground into society that suicide is a sin. Only the weak and the mentally ill wouldn't want to live.

Abortions are legal because there are certain situations in which you don't want/can't keep the baby. Like if a girl is raped. I don't really think she would want the baby. Or if a girl get's pregnant at a really young age. Abortion is good in these situations. But I do agree with you on the fact that there should be assissted suicide. I think you would need to have a certain predicament. Like as you said being extremely ill or diabled... Im not too sure.

I, for my part, handiest feel that abortion must be illegal if the woman is making use of it as a method of birth manage. Humans make errors repeatedly and i don't keep in mind it murder for the equal rationale that men and women should not have funerals for miscarriages... Considering it's no longer relatively a person. And assisted suicide is now authorized within the state of Washington, but handiest below the circumstance that the person is terminally unwell and they selected to head out with dignity i.E. The dying with dignity regulation.

With euthanasia the Person in question is already alive

While with abortion the life exist in potential

Because even if healthy, not all foetuses survive to term

This is before you start thinking about morality or legal issues,

The Thinking is, even someone with poor quality of life, could still live

And a Cure or life changing advance could be discovered today or tomorrow.

The Fear of a family suing , if a Doctor allowed someone to die, the day before a Cure all was declared, exists.

Assisted suicide has emotional and political implications. Reminds many of Hitler's aborted useless mouths killings during WWII. Make assisted suicide legal nationwide then maybe extreme ugly bertha butt removal would be next! Who knows what this could lead to!

Abortion was illegal for a long time. Perhaps there will be a roe vs wade for assisted suicide.
