Why do I not get xp in WoW for certain characters?

I play the free version. When I went to Fenris Isle (Silverpine Forest) and killed anyone there I gained no xp

Update:

Thanks for your help Chris. They are all 12-14 lv and I am currently 13. As far as I know I dont have anything turned off but I'll check.

Update 2:

I think this island is outside our territory ( no undead banners ) could this be why I dont get xp?

    If the mobs are too many levels below your current level, you get no XP for them. You can tell this by looking at their badges when you have them targeted. A gray level indicator means that they will grant no XP.

    Also, it's possible to disable the gaining of XP in general for certain characters, which people can use to ensure that their characters remain at a particular level for PVP (battleground/arena) purposes.
