Is it a coincidence that...?

when teams have interleague play, they play their respective divisions? Or is it planned that way?

For the Phillies at least, it seems that they play the Blue Jays, Red Sox, and Yankees every year.

No they usually alternate each year. LIke the Philles might play the AL East teams this year. But they will face the AL West next year and then the AL Central the following year. Usually there is a 3-year cycle.

THe only standstill interleague is the "rival interleague games". Like Oakland always plays San Francisco 6 times a year, same with Texas and Houston(will change after Astros move to AL West), and New York Mets and New York Yankees, etc.

Teams alternate each year. Last year the NL East played the AL West. However, there is usually a "rivalry" series against some local team... so Baltimore will played Washington every year, Tampa and Miami, San Fransisco and Oakland, Houston and Texas, etc. etc.
