make sure you're only using one computer for your music, because other computers can have different iTunes settings that can mess up your iPhones music library.
also, you can make your music managing manual, which means that your phone won't automatically sync whenever you connect it to iTunes, and it means you can drag & drop new songs into your phones library one by one rather than having to let the WHOLE thing resync.
to do that, connect your phone to iTunes, select your phone in the iTunes window, click on the "Summary" tab, and then select "manually manage files" or whatever.
be warned though: make sure you do that on the computer that you know you will continue to use for all your music, because once you sync the manual settings, your phone might empty out once again. (but then after that, you won't have to worry about that happening anymore.)
also, don't plug your phone into some different computer and try and make that manual so that you can add some of their songs onto your phone, because once again, your phones music will clear out and you'll have to start all over again.
hope I helped.

just on your iphone go into itunes and log in with your apple id then your can dowmload your purchased stuff there as well as buy new stuff. no need to cable sync with a computer.
