Minimalist/barefoot shoe recommendations?

I am morbidly obese but trying to get healthy without surgery. ..and I want to start walking. I have been wearing crocs everywhere, even work (super casual dress code...shorts/flip flops ok) but the material has started irritating my skin. Since I had very little money and my old sneakers were just too tight I bought a pair of el cheapo aqua socks from WalMart. Walking in them feels like I'm barefoot. :) I love it. ...but they are loose in the forefoot and nearly slip off my feet when I walk. Another thing I also noticed is the near lack of back pain when I walk from the back of the parking lot in the aqua socks. If I wore crocs or other regular sneakers my back would be hurting so bad I would be in tears so I was always trying to park close. Even then my back would still be really hurt. Because of the difference I feel walking in the aqua socks I am very interested in purchasing a pair of minimalist shoes. ...but I have a problem that will probably keep me out of them....my feet. They are wide. Wide enough to where I can only wear men's wide width sneakers. No women's shoes at all. ...and because of my weight I also suffer from edema (swollen legs/feet). ..and take prescription meds for it. I'm hoping my weight loss + diet change will end the problem.

So far I have tried on the New Balance Minimus. I loved the way it felt but it was slightly too narrow, but it wasn't the wide width version since the store didn't have any. It looked wide so I thought it was wide. oh well. I also tried out the Vibrams at another store...the speed (figured this style would work for my puffy foot) but couldn't get it on (probably because I never tried these on before and had no idea how to do it easily). Next I tried the classics but they were very tight across the top of my foot and the pockets were tight on some of my toes.

Would the KSO model be stretchier? Any other shoe recommendations? ...and am I just too fat for these types of shoes?

Update:

suszcza....I love being totally barefoot and do so but only on my own property. Beyond that it just isn't safe because of people chucking glass bottles in the street and what not. Besides that my neighborhood is paved in rocky black ashpalt...doesn't feel nice to bare feet at all, especially this time of year when it is sooo hot. Can't walk in the grass beside the street either...all the land that isn't used for homes is posted "no tresspassing". I like walking at the local park but there are signs posted requiring all visitors to wear shoes.

Update 2:

@RunninWild...Only reason I didn't try on KSO while I was at the store was running out of time. The store I went to had lots of other shoes so I'll probably go back to that store to try on more shoes...and the KSO just for grins of nothing else. I looked into the Brooks on their own website. No mention of wide widths. As for the walking...its a combo of change of diet and exercise that gives the best result.

@Adam...Without shoes I strike with the ball of the foot when walking. Until I looked at the minimalist shoes I never paid attention how I strike when I walk. There are dedicated running stores in the area but they are not open when I'm able to visit. I never buy shoes without trying them on first. I've always loved Nike. I've owned several pairs over the years. Their shoes to me anyway tend to run slightly on the wide side making it fairly easy to fit into them...even the women's versions which I can't wear in other brands.

The KSO's would be a little stretchier, but with all of your weight, I wouldn't suggest wearing barefoot shoes. I would probably get heavier shoes with more support, but obviously that wouldn't be quite as comfortable for you. Remember, walking isn't going to give you big results. The best way to lose weight is by your diet. Walking consistently will help a little bit, but you need to focus on other areas. Brooks would have some good options for you- shoes wise anyway -, they have a wide option in almost every model.

The purpose your once more most likely feels bigger is that much less of each and every foot strike goes through your heels - this alterations the best way the power is dissipated inside the cut down body. What I propose is you pass take a look at on a entire bunch of walking sneakers. Go to a going for walks-distinct sports store if that you would be able to, they're going to have further stuff, and feature them aid you. You do not always have got to acquire from them, however the only method to prefer sneakers is to take a look at on sneakers. I'd propose watching into Nike, they extra on the whole than now not have huge items of such a lot in their shoes (appears like runners each love or hate Nike footwear, not anything in among). I could prevent the toe-type ones like Vibrams for now, as your frame will feasible trade and what suits your ft at reward may not in a few months - minimalist shoes will also be tightened with the laces, however the toe wallet on Vibrams can't, and sneakers that slide round can blister your feet.

The reason your back likely feels better is that less of each foot strike is going through your heels - this changes the way the energy is dissipated within the lower body.

What I suggest is you go try on a whole bunch of running shoes. Go to a running-specific sports store if you can, they will have more stuff, and have them help you. You don't necessarily have to buy from them, but the only way to pick shoes is to try on shoes.

I would suggest looking into Nike, they typically have wide versions of most of their shoes (seems like runners either love or hate Nike shoes, nothing in between). I would avoid the toe-style ones like Vibrams for now, as your body will likely change and what fits your toes today may not in a few months - minimalist shoes can be tightened with the laces, but the toe pockets on Vibrams can't, and shoes that slide around can blister your feet.

All of those things are a rip-off. Save yourself the money and just go barefoot as nature intended.
