Is it more curteous to place the highest minimum bid or do you stay at the minimum bid until you're outbid?

Sometimes I am the first bidder and then the price doesn't go up at all but I wonder if the person needs the money-should I bid more if I have the money or just stay at the minimum bid?

Update:

Thanks...I usually do that, but I wondered what other people do.

Update 2:

Also I was referring to ebay...where you can win auctions for used or new items.

That's part of the 'game'. Your goal is to pay the lowest price you can get away with. If the seller absolutely has to have a certain amount he needs to open higher or set a reserve.

Your not responsible for being courteous or giving the seller a satusfactory sales price.
