Why is smoking so discouraged?
I went through a time where I would have an occasional cigar and I enjoyed the time of smoking them (only one a week). I ended up going to the doctor and they put on my health record that I was a smoker and I would have had to pay the same premium of a chain smoker as far as I could tell. One country where a huge population smokes made a major step to discourage it. If someone finds out that a person smokes they might get a lecture about how it's so bad for them. I understand keeping kids from smoking but even smoking in public, if someone is standing outside a gas station people aren't going to inhale nearly as many toxins as we breathe on a regular basis from the air around us. A car makes so much carbon monoxide that it can't be running inside a garage or it could be fatal. Why is smoking so discouraged if it is the smokers choice to live the life style and to enjoy smoking? I really am curious to see what people will say.
I know how bad it is for ones health but why can't society let the individual choose for themselves? Everyone knows how bad it is, even smokers. There are other daily activities that are hazardous to our health but why focus on smoking? Smoking is an enjoyable experience, it is relaxing to be able to take time out of the day and just sit still while puffing off a cigar and some people enjoy the smell. Even a simple camp fire or sitting at the racetrack could be compared to second hand smoking but no one talks about the chemicals in that smoke. Why can't society let the individual choose?

Yeah, I always get the whole your too young to start smoking speech from strangers. Its horrible I am 22 yr old, I don't smoke around family or kids or pets, etc. It not like am smoking crack or something? and try to encourage young kids to smoke. I don't smoke that often either one or two a day, I'm not a chain smoker.
I wish there was more ash trays around town, I hate just putting out a smoke in the middle of a street :(

Because it is disgusting and is a well known health hazard. The existence of many other types of pollution doesn't make the pollution caused by cigarettes anymore acceptable. They release benzene, hydrogen cyanide (used to kill Jews in concentration camps during WW2), formaldehyde and many other toxic chemicals into the air, and with the prevalence of smoking nowadays, it's a significant amount. While the smokers may be enjoying the habit, they inevitably affect the health of those around them. I've heard plenty of cases where a person who has never smoked has contracted lung diseases, particularly lung cancer. It is so easy to never try it, and so it is so blatantly stupid to try it. What a waste of years off of the smoker's life and anyone that surrounds them on a regular basis. I know you don't see too many cigars littering the ground, but cigarettes are all over the place, which isn't too pleasant to see. There is not a single beneficial thing about smoking. The extreme difficulty to quit is no excuse, because had the person never tried, there wouldn't be a problem.
In the end, it truly is up to the individual whether or not to risk their health, but in the case of smoking, it affects those who don't smoke as well. Disgusting litter, second-hand smoke, and air pollution IN ADDITION to all the other sources of pollution.

Because it's bad for your health as well as others? Why would someone go around advocating it when it does that? What sense would that make? Keywords: BAD FOR THE HEALTH OF OTHERS. Not just yourself.

Holes in your throat, lung cancer, inhaling tar and battery acid and who knows what else, killing brain cells, lowering your life expectancy, wasting tons of money for no good reason... Use Google and take your pick.
