The topic of diet has been the subject of numerous peer-reviewed scientific studies. The best independent researchers universally recommend what is known as a whole plant based diet that has limited quantities of processed ingredients such as oil. Although olive oil has been promoted as a health food, in reality it carries along a lot of calories and very little nutrition. The touted Omega-3 fatty acids within oils are better obtained through nuts and ground flax seed. The Mediterranean diet is extremely healthy except for the oil recommendation. The 1950s studies on which this diet was based failed to account for the real proportions of vegetables and oil consumed. The longest lived populations are vegetarians with minimal animal based food products and almost no refined or processed food items. The Standard American Diet (SAD) is strongly correlated with vascular disease, cancer, and diabetes. The rates of these diseases in vegetarian populations are many times lower than in Western countries. Longevity and health is better in vegetarian communities than in America (if there is adequate food and sanitation). Western medicine is fantastic at prolonging life, but the quality of life often suffers. Professor T. Colin Campbell headed the China-Cambridge-Oxford Project for nearly three decades, and found convincing scientific evidence to support a whole plant based diet.
That means a diet designed to optimize health and longevity should contain a wide variety of foods in the following categories:
+ Leafy greens (kale, collards, chard)
+ Legumes (peas, beans, lentils)
+ Whole grains (brown rice, quinoa)
+ Colorful vegetables that are raw and steamed
+ Whole fresh fruit
+ A source of Omega-3 fatty acids (ground flax seed, walnuts, and so on)
+ Vitamins sources providing adequate B12 and D
Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr. has had the greatest success in reversing vascular disease using this diet. Many others, including Dr. Dean Ornish, Dr. Neal Barnard, and Dr. Joel Fuhrman have reported similar clinical success.
Regardless if you are female, male or too fat, or too thin, this way of eating is a way to improve health and maintain a healthy weight. This is a lifestyle change that will result in a permanent improvement to your health.
When changing your diet, caution is important. If you make immediate changes to your diet, you will experience discomfort similar to withdrawal symptoms from a drug. Your body may be "addicted" to unhealthy foods and unhealthy quantities of salt, sugar, fat/oil, caffeine, alcohol, MSG, aspartame, and other processed and refined food like substances. If you stay on the diet for a few days, these symptoms will disappear and you will start feeling better than you did before you started this way of eating. If you are on medication or if you have a specific disease or genetic disorder, this diet may need to be modified. It's always best to work with a medical professional when changing your diet significantly. For example, statins are very powerful and effective in lowering your cholesterol level. This drug can become too effective if you stop eating cholesterol by eating only vegetables. Many other drugs may need to be reduced in dosage or eliminated completely if you start choosing healthy foods.
If you'd like medical supervision, you might consider clinics to get started, I'd recommended retreats sponsored by Dr. John McDougall, Dr. Joel Fuhrman, or Dr. Lisle. These medical professionals will teach you how to eat properly and provide you a safe place to detox from the Standard American Diet.

I have 4 boys and 6 girls and can honestly say gender has nothing to do with their personality - you will get shy males and females and you will get affectionate males and females. Neither gender is more playful than the other. Boys do sometimes need their 'bits' cleaning or their sweat gland cleaning though so girls are better for you if you don't want to do that sort of dirty work. I totally have to disagree with the person who said not to get a guinea pig for a child under 16. My parents got our first guinea pigs when I was 4 (of course then I didn't care for the pigs) but gradually as I got older I did more and more for the pigs. By the time I was 13 I did everything for my guinea pigs - except pay for food and vet bills. My parents didn't even check up on the pigs because they knew they could trust me. I would always spot when one was ill and when I was 14 I had my first litter of baby guinea pigs. Now I am 17 and am a very proud mummy to 10 piggies :) Of course if your kids are very young or you do not have complete trust in them, yes you will need to be the main carer. But my pigs have taught me so much and I've become so responsible. I'm hoping now to become a Veterinary nurse. :) :)
