Can I claim a 17 yr old daughter as a dependent if she makes more than $10,000 a year?

Is it true that when she files as long as she doesn't claim herself as a dependent, meaning she won't get any of her taxes back, then I still can claim her?

Only when you and her both meet all of the rules that you each will have to meet for you to be able to claim her as a qualifying child dependent on your 1040 income tax return for the tax year.

When this is the case she would NOT be allowed to claim her own exemption on her own correctly completed income tax return for the tax year BUT she might still be able to qualify for a REFUND of some of the withheld federal income tax amount that should have been withheld from her GROSS wages earning for the tax year and that were reported in the Box 1 of her 1040 income tax return after the end of the tax year.

The Box 2 of her W-2 form should have the $$ amount that she should have had withheld as her advanced estimated tax payments for the tax year and she would get a credit for that amount on her 1040 income tax return during the tax filing season and if that amount is MORE than her FIT liability is she would then qualify for a REFUND of some are all of the amount.

Full time student attending school during any 5 month period of the tax year living n your home that you maintain for this purpose more than 6 months of the year
