What is the origin of the piggy bank?

It seems a little strange that we'd pick the shape of some livestock animal for a receptacle for our spare change.

    my understanding (from long ago) is that "piggy" refers to the pig-iron metal that they were first made out of. Of course, then that lead (<no pun intended) to the use of the shape of the barnyard animal.
