My 3 year old son is taking after his father...?

Normally this would be a good thing, but my son's father is a habitual liar and my son who is 3 years old is doing the same.

I am extremely concerned and do not want to see my son grow up and loose his family and friends due to lying as his father has, what should I do to rectify this issue with my son?

I do not want to have to spank him for it, and just talking to him is not working either.

Update:

My husband and I have joint custody, but I am the primary custodial parent. I'm sure he's already filed the paperwork for divorce. The fall of our relationship was due to his lies and me not emphasizing enough that he needs professional help.

I just want to break that cycle of lying as far as my son is concerned; he deserves much more and I want him to be comfortable with telling the truth... Clearly his father is not.
