As a karateka, I've never competed in a weight class based arena, will someone please explain cutting weight, the limits of, and the methods behind doing so?

This is an unhealthy practice of losing weight quickly in order to compete in some sport. It is commonly done in boxing, wrestling, and now mma. Basically, it is believed that the fighter who normal weigh one one will have an advantage if he/she fights in a lower weight class. There is no proof that this is true. The truth is there are those that do not believe that fighter is good enough to win in their natural weight class. Therefore if they believe that if they fight in a lower weight class they can win. The will be stronger than or they will have more skill than the fighters of the lower weight class. If they are bigger and stronger than those in that class this will help them win. However, many fighter do poorly in the lower weight class.

Superior fighter prove all of the time higher weight class can be won by better fighter. Many boxers have won titles in more than one weight class because of their superior skill. They gain weigh in order to compete.

properly it easily relies upon on the placement. some people decrease weight via fact in many circumstances it quite is extra advantageous to be the main important of one branch and not the smallest in yet another. Like somebody suggested above, while you're around 230 pounds, alot of heavyweights may be larger and can weight extra advantageous than you (265 pounds) having a 35 pound benefit over you. yet once you decrease down 25 pounds you need to be larger than the sunshine Heavyweights. yet additionally some people try this at Catchweights only so as that they have got not got a too enormous benefit over the different fighter.

You dehydrate your body to remove big quantities of body weight for weight ins, which are the day before the fight. Then you re-hydrate thus gaining weight, fighting much bigger than your actually weight class. Alot of fighters are able to cut 20-30 lbs.

This is a dangerous practice, and can take a big toll on performance, and increase the risk of a stroke.

There are good ways, and bad ways.

The basic concept is the more you cut, the bigger and stronger you have the potential to be in the fight. A lot of people do it in a very liver-destroying, dangerous way. Others don't. (link)
