can i major in anything to become an elementary school teacher?

I am majoring in sociology with a minor in spanish. I want to become an elementary school teacher. I know I have to get my teaching credential and pass the cbest..but i was wondering....do you have to major in humanities, child development or liberal arts to become an elementary school teacher or can you major in anything and still become an elementary school teacher?

CBEST? Never heard of it. We need to pass PRAXIS in Ohio.

It really depends on what sort of teacher you want to be. All schools SHOULD have certified, licensed teachers. However, that's not the case for a lot of schools. Some are happy to take people who like children and have a desire to teach. That said, if you want a better chance of getting a good job you should major in early childhood education.

However, with the majors you have you can teach older kids in specific spanish or sociology classes, which is nice too.

    Good luck!

you need to find out if the district where you want to apply accepts "alternative licensure" students. basically that's someone who did not major in education but wants to be a teacher anyway. not every district will let you go that route, especially in elementary. at that level you need to be competent in all subjects and as an education major you will take methodology classes in each of those subjects. check the licensing requirements for your state (CA, right?). i'm not very familiar with CA elementary requirements but definitely check the state dept. of education site. it'll tell you everything you need to know.

You can major in education, then they'll ask you what section you want to teach for (Elementary, Middle or High). You choose elementary and they'll set you up for classes to learn to teach elementary kids. Then you graduate with you degree that says you can teach at any elementary school.
