What to do with a hermit crab?
My 4 year old daughter just found a hermit crab crawling in our lawn. We live in South Florida, I used to see them as a child, but have not seen one again until today. He's big! We live on a large fruit and vegetable farm, so I'm sure he's been eating the fallen fruit. Well, that's what I think. Anyway, she wants to keep him, what should I do now?

From the description i think it is a land hermit crab. You should give it a 10 gallon tank and sand the depth should be over twice its height. It needs a warm and humid environment so keep the sand wet but not flooded. They also like climbing. Try giving it a companion because they are social creatures. Give it many types of "safe" foods, and it should have a good diet between the nutrient they need. You can try register at www.hermitcrabassociation.com the people at the forum will help you.

Get like a really small fish tank, like one that's $10 from Target or where ever. Put some sand an maybe a little aquarium figure to make it look nice. I used to have a little set up like this for my hermit crab when I was younger.

Hermit crabs are common pets, and really quite easy to look after, but if its a wild one it might get stressed from being captive, though this isn't usual, they are actually quite loveable, or at least the ones I kept were, but in the end its up to you, but you would have to check if there was a law against taking wild animals in Florida.
It probably was eating the fallen fruit, mine loved banana.
Hope this helps.
