A Question About Flight Check-In?
I am flying to the other side of the globe in four days, and it is my first time flying. I have a question about check-in.
First, exactly what is it? A "Hey, I am here and am going to take this flight"?
Second, I know I will have to go to the desk anyhow because we are checking one bag, though the rest will be carryon. Thus, is it necessary and/or is there any benefit to checking in online ahead of time, or should I just do it when I arrive?
Do I have to checkin for every segment of my trip (we will take three planes to get to our destination and then three planes to get home), or do I just check in for the first segment? Each way?

You just need to check in your baggage at the point of start not in every transit.

You will check in for all your flight segments to your destination. By checking in online you will have a better choice of seats, as if you wait until you arrive at the airport you will be given a seat from what's left. When you check in online you will just have to go to the desk to drop off your luggage. Your boarding cards can be printed out at home.
You will have to pick up your luggage at the point of entry to the country you are going. If you have a connecting domestic flight in your destination country you will have to bring your luggage through customs and then drop it off again for your final leg.
If your point of entry to the country is your final destination the bag will be checked through to there, so you won't have to pick it up at any other stage during your trip.
The same procedure applies for your return journey. You can normally check in online up to 24 hour before your first flight segments scheduled departure.
Hope this helped.
