Can I keep my cell phone number without a cell phone?

I have a work cell, and I would like to discontinue my own personal cell service for a year or so. Can I keep my phone number during that period of time?

Assuming you live in the United States, you could port your personal cellphone number to Google Voice. That way, people who still know you by your existing personal number would still be able to reach you.

Get a Google Voice account and configure the service to forward to your work mobile. Don't bother giving this number out, because the next thing you'll want to do is to port your personal number to the newly-assigned GV number. Once the number porting is complete, people who call your old personal number will actually be connecting to GV, which will then forward to your work cellphone.

If your work situation changes and you give up your company-issued device, you could just get a new personal phone and have Google Voice forward to that phone. Or, you could choose to port your Google Voice number back to the new personal device. That's actually more of a hassle, and you give up many of the benefits that GV provides.

That's how I would try to protect a personal number.

yes. i did just the same.

I've had my number for 10 years and decided to leave att. but i didn't want to keep moving my number every single time.

so I imported my number to google voice. you'll need to set up a google voice first. then afterward you'll need to initiate the transaction from google voice side. when after it happens it will automatically cancel your current plan.

So only do this when your ready to cancel your personal phone plan.
