When people criticise each other harshly..?

...is it fair to say they feel strongly about that criticism because they have a personal issue with it themselves? Otherwise, why make the effort to put on a show (use vulgar language, appear really passionate if not obsessive, etc)?

I know a handful of such people in my life, and for whatever reason, I can't help but think their crude judgement shows nothing but their own personal weaknesses.

Update:

Definitely not, I don't think I'm quite old enough. But I hold this bias based on my own experiences, so some expanded thoughts would be useful.

Update 2:

I never said I was the one being criticised (although it happens too of course). I am usually the neutral party observing, I am just curious if my assumption is way off or not

Because if what one person does is the opposite of another, they don't belong in "their" tribe and if they disagree then that person creates a threat because it could reduce their own personal value if they appear to be wrong- therefore, the correct one has the greater value and must take over.

It's like the alphas of the animal kingdom.

They pick on you because they're not satisfied with their own lives. Or their chakras are not in balance.
