Every brand new Kindle Fire comes with a free month of Amazon Prime. Amazon Prime allows you to borrow one book for free every month, so this was free as long as you clicked on the borrow button and not on the buy button. The book should jut disappear from your Kindle when the loan is up.

Amazon Prime also allows you to stream unlimited movies, videos, and TV shows from the Amazon library for free, get free shipping on items from Amazon, get extra free books, as well as better deals on books. Amazon Prime is available for $79 a year.

You can borrow books from most public libraries for your Kindle. Just go in and ask if you local library offers this free service.
