What is the going rate for an in-home babysitter?
I am expecting my first child early next year. My wife and I are considering having an in-home babysitter instead of taking baby to day care. We would need the sitter for 36-42 hours a week. What would be a fair wage to pay the sitter?

You should opt for daycare. First of all, how well will you really know your sitter? Are you that trusting to leave your own child with someone alone in your home? I wouldn't leave my child with anyone except very close family members.
A professional daycare has multiple staff members around at any given time so your child's safety is best in that kind of environment. If money is at factor, many daycare centres are affiliated with the government and are non-profit which translates to cheaper service.

Whatever you can afford, my family, a well off family, paid the babysitter $8 an hour while I had friends paying babysitters $5 an hour. If you find a 14 or 13 year girl, they will really just accept anything, because money is the best thing in the world to them.

It depends where you live. I live in California, and I paid my unemployed friend $12/ hour to watch my daughter 45 hours a week. I would give her an extra $25 to clean my house. That ended after 2 months because she got picky about money and wanted $20/ hour. Honestly, you're much better taking your baby to a day care. It's nice having someone at home, but it makes things much more complicated. Day care centers are licensed and professional (at least they should be).
