Using Hoppe's No. 9 For Gun Cleaning and It's Enough To Puke A Dog; Suggestions?

So I know this might sound crazy but I've used other gun cleaners before like CLP Break-free and and stuff (which I will probably go back too) for my gun cleaning. Recently I thought for suggestions of others I'd give Hoppe's No.9 one of the older gun cleaners in the world a good old college try.

I did. YES IT WORKS OK but a few days ago I was cleaning my shotgun with it and this is a shotgun I keep in my room with a trigger lock on it but still easy access for home defense. So I clean it and it's practically making me sick giving me a headache just using the stuff (I wasn't wearing gloves) which was probably a mistake but it says on Hoppe's web site that prolonged exposure to this on the skin can cause it to be absorbed.

In any case I washed it off quick when I was done and wiped it off the gun really well with a rag. All is good right? Wrong. Even though the gun is in my closet about 10 feet from my bed I can smell the **** alllll night long those noxious fumes all night long. It wasn't probably enough to make me sick just highly annoying. This DID go away after a day or two but still annoying.

So then I start to do a little reading online about how this **** is carcinogenic etc. etc. It sounds highly toxic.

So it got me thinking of some questions; I know I can be a little paranoid but this stuff is horrible:

1. Since this stuff can be absorbed through the skin can it later be absorbed through the skin FROM THE GUN ITSELF i.e. using it? Some of it appears to remain on the gun even after wiping it because it practically stunk me out of my room.

2.What safety precautions and experiences do you have with this stuff?

3.Is there something else you recommend that isn't highly toxic, highly fragrant or both?

majority of gun clears use kerosene as a solvent, that's what gave you a headache. use in place with good ventilation. like outside. it's like gas stations. after some moron spills a bit of gas you just can't stand hanging around the smell. makes you feel very ill. because it's toxic and your body is kindly telling you that.

other cleaners like mineral oil, brake cleaner, they all use some kind of petroleum product and they will all make you ill if you breathe the fumes too much.

if you don't want a gun cleaner that makes you feel ill then it's just soap & water and a ton of effort.

1, all petroleum based cleaners are toxic. they can be absorbed thru the skin or inhaled.

2, hoppe's 9 smells nice but only at very low levels. its gives me a headache too at high levels. I think people who practically breathe this stuff are idiots, already too brain damaged by it to realize it's very toxic. I just do it in a well ventilated room. I also use lower fumes alternatives, like M-Pro 7 (smells vaguely like window cleaning solution but very little smell and isn't petrol-solvent based.

3, petroleum jelly. the kind you buy the the pharmacy section of walmart. it's cheap, it's apparently non toxic (because you can often apply to skin like a lotion), and has very little smell.

You can oil guns with it no problem. it lubes and protects things from water. USP petroleum jelly has no moisturizers in it, it's pure petroleum jelly. it cna be absorbed thru the skin but no ill effect. although you probably won't need hand lotion for a week.

    Works well on the following:

Most bolt action rifles. AK's SKS's, commie handguns and other rifles, H&R, NEF, Mossberg 500 and clones, Glocks, Hi Point, Phoenix, Jimenez and similar cheap pistols, Savage, Marlin, Kel Tec (shotgun).

I started using petroleum jelly on all my guns after a 6 month test on my CZ-52. My CZ doesn't shoot anything besides corrosive surplus, the the corrosion was becoming a serious problem because the bore can develop hairy rust on a humid day in the short 30 minute drive between range and home. The gun's pretty old and most of the blue has worn off. other parts, especially the chamber started rusting too in those 30-45 minutes, oil didn't help much as it's a liquid and it'll evaporate on it's own in storage or wit hte gun is fired.

I used petroleum jelly as a general lubricant for a while and decided ot try it on the CZ as a rust prevention. it's a solid and does not evaporate. it has a low melting temp which allows it to get into the smallest spaces and lube them.

immediately the rust problems stopped (except the bore, little can be done about that). after 6 months of very good results I tried it in my AK & Mosins, which all shoot corrosive ammo. the jelly is applied as a solid but it can turn into a liquid when heated a little above human body temps. it preserve wood stock materials, and protection gun metal like no other oil has. except cosmoline. it does not get in the way of gun operation and is easily removed by wiped it off.

I also discovered it will trap soot & dust and other things, Petroleum jelly protects the metal, keeps water away from metal, and keeps soot from the metal. it's like the ultimate in gun protection.

however application tends to be messy, removal can be messy.

petroleum jelly also never quite comes off without application of solvent oils, so even if you wiped it off and heated the part until no more drips off, there's still enough ot protect the metal for a while.

to deal with the rusting bore issues I use lithium grease, a high temp (still not as high as I'd like) grease typically used for industrial applications, it's even more hard-wearing them petroleum grease and excellent invisible protection against finger oils. removal is only possible with soap & water.however it's only ot protect, it's not an effective gun lube.

Source(s): petroleum jelly first hand use on all my guns and recommended it to a friend, who reports great results. it's also good for long term storage (with dessicant packets in a sealed container) if you don't want to touch cosmoline.

"I took my troubles down to Madame Rue

You know that gypsy with the gold-capped tooth

She's got a pad down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine

Sellin' little bottles of Love Potion Number Nine"

Sorry couldnt resist. Just use something else. I have used #9 for decades. I just use it in a vented room and wash my hands after I use it. After it dries in a few days the smell isn't so strong. Im almost 60 so if it was going to do something to me I think I would know by now. But then I dont drink it, bathe in it or use it in a closed small space. And yes I often do wear gloves just to keep it off my hands so the wife is happy.

What a terrible and tragic story. It certainly sounds to me that the man was waiting and looking for an opportune moment to do what he wanted, which was get rid of the dog. How sad that there are people in this world with such malicious hate in their hearts. I frequently do what you said this woman did. When I meet my friends in our "dog walking group" at the park on Saturday mornings, I love dropping my lead and letting my dog rush ahead a few metres to greet my friends and their pooches! I also love when their dogs run up to me in a tail wagging frenzy. Saturday morning is their fun day, their play day, it always begins with that little ritual, so gorgeous... and I will never think of it quite the same way again. The thought of one of our dogs being shot for that is nothing short of horrific. I think bringing this to the attention of the media is a must as is getting a lawyer. This mans actions need to be highlighted and an example set. People cannot take the law into their own hands for no reason, policeman or not. Aside from the fact that what he did to the dog was inexcusable, his actions were in general extremely dangerous! Bullets can ricochet, there were two people on that street that could have been injured or killed had he missed the dog. What an idiot! I hope they strip him of his job and lock him up, because that is where he belongs. The fact that he let his true feelings about the dog be known, long before the incident is actually a blessing in disguise, (I hope they have witnesses to this) because it will make it easier I would imagine to prove it was a planned act, rather than him being able to say there were never any hard feeling prior to the incident and it was just self defence. @Divapom - that story of yours made me feel sick to my core!

Use Hoppe's to clean, just have a fan on to blow fumes the other way and open a window. I use Hoppe's cleaner and no problem. After cleaning give a coat of CLP or some other gun oil.

I have it and use if the cleaning after soap and water for corrosive ammo or black powder. Otherwise it just smells too bad for me too. I've been around it and using it with my Dad since I was a little kid (40 years) and I haven't seen any health problems in me or my father who has been using it for more than 60 years. I use G96 for most things though. I like the smell and it doesn't linger like Hoppes.

    Hoppes 9

Fine. Don't use it. Use whatever you want.

People have been using #9 for decades with no adverse effects that I'm aware of (Much longer than CLP has been around). A lot of people LOVE the smell of #9.

I can think of other things that annoy me more than gun solvent. Whining springs to mind.

Look, kid. If you don't like the smell then don't use the stuff. Wipe your gun with BreakFree or Eezox and it should get rid of the smell.

Personally, I love the smell of Hoppe's in the morning. I've been using it for 50 years and it hasn't hurt me yet.

Sounds like you're using way too much! You shouldn't be getting it on your hands, and the smell ( which I actually enjoy ) should dissipate in an hour or so. You don't need any more than a thin film of #9 for it to do its job! :)

That's why I use M-Pro 7. Minimal odor, non-toxic, safe on most materials, biodegradable and works as well as Hoppes 9. (In fact I think it is the same stuff the Hoppes markets as their Elite Gun Cleaner.)
