Can you have attach smaller wood joist with larger joist for the floor construction?

I am working on architectural model. 2 x 18 j-joist can span up to 30 feet. There are other areas that need joist that span up to 20'-4". I don't think that I would need 2 x 18 j-joist for that area. It cost more money and I figure that it would be cheaper to go with 2 x 12. How is it possible to attach the smaller joist with the larger joist? Any helpful photos or diagrams would be helpful. Thank you in advance.

Update:

Colorado is the state. I hope that helps. Thanks.
