About sympathetic strings in musical instruments?

Do sympathetic strings in musical instruments (like viola d'amore, sitar etc.) can easily look "vibrate" if melody string played?

Just curious

Update:

If not, why sympathetic string can give a sound?

Update 2:

Thanks Toh :)

    Hi,

I'm not quite sure what you're trying to ask, but I will try my best to answer them :)

You can see the sympathetic strings vibrating if you look very very closely! Very often, the vibration of the sympathetic strings are audible but hardly visible.

In general, the sympathetic strings give a sound because they are affected by the vibration of the "melody string". There are certain conditions that make the sympathetic notes more resounding:

    - The sympathetic string is the same tone or note as the string that is being played

    - The sympathetic string and the "melody string" shares the same harmonics

    Hope this helps.

Do you propose Indian or community American?? Cuz off the right of my head the sitar includes recommendations in case you propose "from India" and prefer buffalo epidermis drums and gourd maracas in case you propose "community american"
