Why can't I save to the desktop?

I have no idea why this happened, but I can no longer save files to the desktop. I have a dell inspiron laptop and Windows 7. Any files. I go to save a Word file and there is no longer the option to save it to the desktop. i can't save directly to the desktop or to any of the files located on the desktop It's simply not an option on the left hand side of the screen (where it has network, computer, etc) Any idea how to fix this?

Update:

edit: IE, but even when I'm not connected to the internet I can't save anything to the desktop. Create a word file, type stuff, try to save as, and am not able to find the ability to save to the desktop or any folder on the desktop

Update 2:

I have a Toshiba i7QM with Windows 7 and have the same problem sometimes - and always with Word 2007. I can click the drop-down arrow on the right side of the Save To section at the top of the dialog and select the Desktop but after I click OK I get a message that it can't be saved there. I use Windows Explorer (that list of stuff in the left margin to go to Computer>C:>Users>My Name>click on "Desktop" and then save. I don't have this problem with older programs that have save dialogs that offer the Desktop as one of the main choices on the left side. Go figure. I'm thinking it's a glitch in Windows 7. I hope someone who knows more than you and I do, comes up with an answer.
