Why is my dog acting really weird?

I just got back from a 5 day vacation, but I don't think that has to do with his behavior. He's a one year old Shih Tzu. When I got home and took my dog out he was fine. I went inside and about ten minutes later he was clawing at my bed. I pushed him down as usual, but he kept coming back up, scratching my bed. My brother said that before my dog went in his room and went under his feet at his computer desk, which is very weird, because my dog has never done that, and never with my brother. He barely acknowledges my brother's existence. So he kept climbing up on my bed, and I sat down on the floor to check on him. He kept circling around me and climbing on my lap getting up and repeating the process. When I moved to my couch he climbed up on me and constantly looked out the window. It looked like it was going to rain, but he usually falls asleep during even the worst storms. I took him out and he went to the bathroom but he kept acting strange. He did have tapeworms, but we got pills at the vet a while ago, and there's no problem with them anymore. No other worms like heart worms either. Fleas and ticks aren't a problem either, we got a pill for that too. The pills work great. When we were outside he clung to me instead of running around, and when I walked a bit further away and called to him he stared off into space. He usually comes straight to me. I snapped and he kept looking off in different directions or not reacting at all. I even dropped little sticks around him and he didn't react. When he realized he wasn't next to me, he went straight to me, looked around, tail down, and just lied down, staring off into space again. He's also got this OCD or maybe it's from his previous owner's abuse, in which he drinks all the water he can get. I gave him water when I came home, but when I checked after I came in, he still had water in his bowl. This has never, EVER, happened. I never thought I'd live to see the day he didn't finish just a bit of water. He's even barfed from drinking too much. He still won't stop clinging, he's also started staring at me and it's been a few hours already since his weird behavior started. I searched up some things to do like checking his eyes, checking if he's dehydrated, and nothing helps. What's wrong with him?

Well, I will say one thing that's a relief. It has nothing to do with his health. Many times, I do not encourage owners to go on vacations without their pets, but sometimes, things have to be done. But anyways, he is suffering from something called separation anxiety. I'm sure you've already heard of this term, and are well aware of its meaning, but let me break it down for you in your specific situation. You're dog is confused, and is alert because he is still wondering what happened to you all that time you were gone. Spinning in circles is a sign of excitement for a dog as well, and I'm being very clingy is normal. Just stay with him for a couple days, and see if things clear up. I can assure you that everything that's happening is emotional, not physical. I hope I helped sweet heart, you're dog really loves you, be proud.

Well, a lot of things could be wrong. If this is the first vacation you've taken, or the longest one, the clinging could just be because you've been gone for so long, or he's just not used to it. He could be hanging around your brother because he thinks you're just rejecting him instead of trying to make him stop acting that way. It's very unlikely, but it could also be a very late reaction from the tapeworms, or another type of worm. Pills are extremely helpful, and they usually work, but sometimes they don't, or have side affects, and those could just now be setting in. The water deal is probably just because he's missed you for so long, and is still trying to get over it. If you had someone look after him, they may have accidentally altered his diet, causing his OCD issues to kick in. I would advise you to take him to the vet if this behavior continues for 3-5 more days. If you don't think any of my suggestions are the problem, you could call his vet if you have the number, or find another local vet in the phone book. I really hope this helps, as I know what it's like to have a possibly sick dog and not know what to do. I really hope your little guy gets better by tomorrow, as he should! Good luck with him! :)

I hope you had a good time on vacation. I love Shih Tzus! They are such sweet little dogs. You shouldn't allow him to beg for attention like that. That is bad behavior. It sounds like your dog wants more attention than usual. I'm sure he missed you guys! Again, don't allow your dog to beg for attention. This leads to very poor behavior. Never allow a dog to climb on you. It sounds like he might have be anxious because of the storm. I would not use the poison that vets give for worms, as it can have very bad side effects on dogs. The same goes for those flea/tick pills! Those pills are nothing but poison and chemicals. Your dog could be having a reaction to one of the pesticide pills you gave him. That is why I will not use these things on my dog, EVER! A friend of mine has a Golden Retriever that suffered a serious of multiple seizures after taking Heartguard Plus. I used Revolution on my cat a few years ago, and he lost huge patches of hair where the medication was put on. Dogs don't get OCD. The cause for his excessive thirst could be diabetes insipidus. Get your dog to the vet and have his blood sugar tested. Symptoms of diabetes insipidus are excessive thirst and excessive urine volume. It can be caused by a head injury, infection, loss of blood supply to the gland, sugery, or a tumor. Certain drugs, high levels of calcium in the body, and kidney disease can also cause diabetes insipidus. I recommend you get your dog to the vet and have an MRI of his head, Urinalysis, and Urine Output test done. My last dog suffered from diabetes insipidus and I managed that without medication and a diet consisting of oily fish, cooked beans, sweet potatoes, jerusalem artichoke hearts, garbanzo beans, a variety of nuts, plums, peas, rye, yams, wheat bran, mung beans, brewer's yeast, figs, millet, sweet rice, radishes, plums, water chestnuts, tangerines, string beans, coconut, asparagus, flaxseeds, mulberries, lemon juice, green beans, lentils, oats, pumpkin, chives, rice, soybeans, winter squash, buckwheat, olives, mandarin oranges, kohlrabi, soy milk, and pears.
