What is wrong with my Horse?

My 20 something year old horse has something wrong with her. I would like to know whats going on before I get a vet to come out and take a look at her. What really is bugging me is that she's growing her winter coat in the middle of July! I know she has cushing's disease, which is a disease that most old horses get. I think the only reason she is growing all this fur is that I'm feeding her lots of this fat supplement. She gets really skinny and I try to fatten her up as much as I can! I think that I'm going to cut her feed back and quit giving her Cool Calories for a while. I think I might give her aspirin too. Do any of you guys have an answer? Thanks :) Have a great day!

Horses do, in fact, begin growing in their winter hair this time of year. Makes summer feel pretty short, right? :) I live in Minnesota and mine have been shedding their summer coats for a few weeks and I can notice the longer hair already.

You DO need to have the vet take a look at your horse. If she does indeed have cushings, then she should be on medication. Pergolide is what is most often used.

Here is a link to read up on it before you consult your veterinarian. Always good to be prepared with the knowledge so that you can ask informative questions when your vet is examining your horse.

I believe the odd hair growth is a symptom of cushings or just old age, my shetland is 29 and he is still hanging on to some of his winter coat now. I woudnt worry if you already know she has cushings. Read up on it :)

Aspirin can cuase severe stomach ulcers. The cushings is making her hair grow more, probably. When your vet comes...talk to him about what your feeding your horse.

my experience, older horses usually begin to have thicker coats. I'd get a vet out though to ask about what you are feeding her and make sure that is right for her.
