Do you think I could use this as an example of irony?

I want to use this as an example of irony for my school assignment, but it uses the word "ironically" in it and I don't know if that's proper or not. The passage is, "Throughout April and early May, Rob Hall had expressed his concern that one or more of the less competent teams might blunder into a jam, compelling our group to rescue them, thereby ruining our summit bid. Now, ironically, it was Hall's expedition that was in grave trouble, and other teams were in the position of having to come to our aid." From the book "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer
