suzuki dt 4 will not run without the choke?

I have removed, taken apart and soaked the carb in a cleaning solvent. I rinsed it, blew it out with air, ran a copper wire through all the passages, blew it out again and the engine runs exactly the same. I checked the fuel pump, it is good, it has new fresh fuel. I put a new gasket between the carb and the engine. Compression is good. I am thinking that maybe the crankshaft seals are leaking. The engine has sat for a couple of years. Anyone have any ideas?

Update:

I did check the compression and it is within specs. Spark plug has nothing to do with it as it starts and runs just not good. Crankshafts certainly do have seals. If they leak you loose manifold pressure and get too much air.

The seals are a possibility, but I doubt it's your problem.I've worked on Suzukis since '89 and never changed a crankshaft seal just because it was leaking.I believe that you still have a carb problem. For some reason Suzuki carbs seem to more finicky than most. The catch 22 is that I can't build that carb for less than it costs brand new if you factor in the labor and kit at shop prices.Primary compression(behind the reeds) should fluctuate between 1-3 psi.If that's the case, buy a new carb for about $120.I use boat.net/parts ,but there are other sites to check.

I agree with Mike,I think you still have a carb problem. Those carbs are a pain in the butt to clean and as mike said its cheaper to buy a new carb then rebuild the one you have when you factor in the labour cost.

  • Your air/fuel mixture adjustment screws could be out of adjustment. I usually run them all the way it then back them out 2 and 1/2 turns then adjust it from there.
