Do fenugreek and mother's milk tea work?

Have you had luck with using these? My baby has had some kind of aversion to the breast for 7 weeks now. She is feeding a few times a day but not as much as she should be. She's been to the doctors and been checked out for everything, is on medications for reflux and I try to watch my diet, but she really doesn't like breastfeeding anymore. She is 5 months old.

As a result my milk supply is quite low, my left breast is almost empty. Has anyone had success stories using either fenugreek or mother's milk tea??

It is likely that she is having teething or some other issue. It is not uncommon for babies to go through phase of nursing more & less. Is she peeing enough? If she gets 4-6 soppy dipes a day she is fine. You can try to encourage nursing by making it very quiet & relaxing whenever possible - so darker room, no distractions, etc. Getting a warm tub with her also works well most of the time. It is quite common for babies as they become highly distracted to do this. Here is a good checklist for how to tell if your older baby is getting enough milk: http://kellymom.com/bf/got-milk/supply-worries/eno...

As far as increasing supply - without nursing more or pumping, then no herb is likely to do much. Think of herbs as more like caffeine if you aren't getting enough sleep. Caffeine is NOT a good substitute for sleep, but may give you a boost when you are feeling sluggish. In the end though, lack of sleep is better solved with more sleep than caffeine. Same deal. Herbs can help short term in boosting, but most stimulus is what really increases production.

And I disagree with the other poster about tea. I used it with great success when I was having low pump output at work & it worked well for me when fenugreek alone had no perceivable effect. You don't have to drink it hot hot - you have to make it hot because it needs to steep - but once that has happened, you could make a pitcher of it if you wanted to & drink it as iced tea. There is nothing saying it has to be consumed while it's hot. You can also just throw a few ice cubes in it & drink it luke warm. I would *assume* moms would use good judgment when drinking hot liquids of any kind around babies & small kids. I didn't give up coffee when I had kids either & never had an issue with it being dangerous. With that said, there are capsules called More Milk plus that have all the same stuff in the ease of a capsule. Some health food stores carry them or they are online at motherlove.com. You can call them & they will tell you if there is someone in your area that carries that. And lots of moms do say fenugreek alone helps. I didn't have luck with it, but many do.

I've used Fenugreek while breastfeeding all 3 of my kids. It has given me between 5-6 ounces more each day. Although I pump and nurse so it could be slightly more than that. It's kind of trial and error until you find the right dosage that works for you. Everyone is different. Once your urine/sweat smells like maple syrup then you know you have the right amount. Good luck!!

Fenugreek worked best for me, primarily because tea means hot water and babies and that doesn't mix. The thing with fenugreek is that some available caplets are more potent then others, you just have to experiment.

Yes, herbs will work. You have to use them daily everyday and also be feeding or pumping a lot. Have you been pumping? I would try to add at least two pumping sessions on daily. Make sure to throw one in overnight if baby is sleeping through the night.

I'm using a tea from http://www.breastea.com/ and it's working really good.
