Sun was bought by Oracle, the database company, a couple of years ago but while I've heard Oracle described as more crooked than politicians (by a programmer for a state government) Sun Microsystems had a stellar reputation Oracle hasn't QUITE dragged through the dust.
Install it. A lot of programs use Java's interpreter to run and that means they won't run unless you have Java installed on your system. The updates are MORE secure than M$'s -- I almost wish they sold UNIX Workstations to the public instead of to businesses -- and you will be amazed by the programs which can stop running.

Sun Microsystem was the creator of Java and is now owned by Oracle Corp.
Has nothing to do with Microsoft other than that implementation runs in MS Windows.

It is safe to update Java. It doesn't belong to Microsoft, but they are compatible.
