Helping a Friend with Depression?

I have a really close friend who lives in Texas that suffers from severe depression and suicidal thoughts, and I try to be there for her (figuratively, I live too far away to be there literally), and I really, really care for her. She means the world to me. But lately, it feels like I can't do enough, and I've noticed she is getting worse. She has tried seeking help, but most places don't deem her severe enough or reasonable enough. I was wondering if anyone knew of a place that she could call or go to that may be able to offer her the help she is looking for. I don't want to lose her to this, or to anything, but I don't know if I can do enough to make her feel better. Please, if you have any suggestions, I would be so grateful.

YES! there are several places she can call. You do not need a referral to see a therapist, that should be her first step. If she has medical insurance there is a mental health number on the back of the card that she can call and receive a list of psychologists, psychiatrists and therapists in her area. It is good that she has someone like you that is willing to obtain information on her behalf. Sometimes depression can make it really hard to seek help. Try and get her to obtain a list of mental heath care providers in her area. The co pays are free for a certain amount of visits and depending on her insurance there may not be a co pay at all. This is a necessary step for someone in her condition if she has not been able to obtain any medication or diagnosis from her current physicians.

PS It is admirable that you are there for her support but keep in mind you are not a mental health specialist. It is very important that she sees a professional to obtain advice.

I have depression as well. I have been suicidal, and have become an expert in self harm. With my experience, the best way you can help someone with depression is to be there for them, to let them CrY, hit, cuss, whatever they need to do, and let them know it is okay. Should someone get suicidal, go with them to get help, and be with them fully through this healing process.

If you want to help your friend the first thing you have to do is to ask her what's the cause of her depression .make her talk about her dreams,if there is something special she want. try to listen when she's talking to you cause people who s suffering with depression allways need someone to talk to.But she's the one who can treat her self.

I'm sure there are a few hotlines she could call in her area.
