Why do so many poker players on TV wear "hoodies"?

I was in a casino last week that was hosting a WSOP tour event and a lot of the players there were wearing hoodies. I've watched some WPT televised events and hoodies seem to be prevalent there too.

I know that gambling is a recreational activity and in the casinos I visit, nobody dresses like James Bond - if they do, it's pretty obvious they are security (or an easy mark) - but why all the hoodies and sweatshirts? It wasn't that hot in the casino I was in. Are poker players THAT superstitious?

The hoodie covers up you jugular vein.. And the veins on your temple.. And yes that is a "read" There are several involuntary "tells" a player has no control over.. Sun glasses are for not letting other players see where your looking as well as good players not being able to see your eyes .. pupils.. Yes your pupils dilate constrict without you knowing it.

It's not superstition but simple strategy. The less of their face and neck is exposed to other players, the less their 'tells' (involuntary physical reactions to bluffing or having a good hand) will be observed by their opponents. Also most poker players make comfort a premium because they want to be as relaxed and clear-headed as possible. I believe one of the players at the Big One For One Drop event, which had a $1 million buy-in, was wearing shorts and flip-flops at the final table! It's definitely not as glamorous as James Bond's nights at the casino, but it's still thrilling in its own way.

Almost ALL prof. players will tell you it's all in the eyes. You can read your opponet by what he/she does with their eyes. It is an involuntary action that one has a hard time controlling, so they prefer to cover their eyes up then be conscience of it all the time. Watch your opponet when they check out there starting cards; do they look to the opponent to their left to see how many chips they have or do they look at their own chips? Do they look away or close their eyes? It most cases if you watch your opponent, after the flop, see if he/she looks down at their chips. This a good sign that they have something and you might want to reconsider betting in if you don't have good starting cards. If they look to their left at their opponents chips, they are looking to see how many chips that player may have and are deciding whether that player would make a call if they themselves threw out a bet. This shows that that player doesn't have the nuts and they should fold. WATCH the eyes...it's all in the eyes!

Hoodies and sunglasses hide your face/eyes, people don't want to give up tells.

Also, the poker player community keeps getting younger ( with <25years old making the final table all the time ), and young people like hoodies!

In some cases it may be simple comfort...some casinos crank up the AC really high. But in most cases it's an attempt to hide inadvertent tells of body language...the more you're covered up, the less likely you might be giving a read to your opponents. That's the same reason a lot of players wear sunglasses.

For a lot of them it could just be to keep warm. Casinos are cold at late hours, it's on purpose to keep people awake to play longer and lose more money. Even now in the middle of the summer I have to bring a hoodie with me when I go to the casino.

The hoodie will cover up many of the possible "tells" that the player may think he is giving away.

Maybe it is way too cold in the casino that is why they are wearing hoodies
