Update 2:

dehapitized i think you have a few things mixed up. the americans wanted to go to war because britain was messing with their trade with the french (among other things). the americans weren't messing with british trade routes....

It cracks me up to hear canadians talk about how "we burned Washington".

The forces who marched on Washington and burned a number of government facilities, to include what later became the White House, were British Regulars! There were no Canadian troops present.

Canada was not even a country then, not even a Dominion, but a loose group of colonies who were as much at odds with each other as they were with the United States.

Well I'm a Brit and I have never given it a thought until I read this so I have looked it up in a book and found this and to be honest I couldn't careless

Two hundred years ago, on June 18, 1812, the United States declared war on Great Britain. No one had right on their side; the outcome was a draw. America wanted a bit of Canada and to stop the British from kidnapping its sailors. The nasty old Brits were also arming the Native Americans, whose land the Americans wanted to steal. Had the British won the War of 1812, they might have helped create a viable Native American nation dominating the Great Lakes region. Alas, it wasn’t to be. The Americans scored successes in 1813, seizing parts of Western Ontario and destroying the Native American dream. The Brits fought back in 1814 and razed Washington DC to the ground. The Americans repulsed British invasions of New York, Baltimore and New Orleans, and a peace was signed on December 24, 1814. During the course of the war, thousands of American slaves escaped to freedom in Canada. Perhaps that was the great paradox of 1812: a slave holding republic took arms against a monarchy committed to emancipation.

The Americans have a habit of only remembering the good things about their history, so they recall the conflict mostly for the fact that it gave them their national anthem. The British remember nothing of their history, so it doesn’t even enter the popular consciousness. For Canada, however, 1812 created a myth of self-reliance and national destiny. Two hundred years later and they are realizing both by economically outpacing the former great powers

Personally I couldn't care less no offense. There is a lot more crap that Western nations are causing for me to worry about some independance war fought centuries ago.

Americans want to celebrate for independance go for it more power to you. Personally one thing much of the planet can't get into their heads is that humanity will go nowhere if we rain independant of one another. Working together is the only way forward but most of the major countries are too busy comparing d*ck sizes to realize that all we are doing is destroying one another instead of pushing ahead. They all claim big armies big economies but what have you got at the end of the day. An army you can't use and several thousand other econmoies with no money to buy from you.

    Smart move.

The British did win the war of 1812, in a certain way. The Americans had been screwing with their trade routes and refusing to trade with Great Britain, which (forgive the run) pissed them off royally, so the Brits came over and really kicked our tails. This is documented, they basically marched right up the east coast, burned down Washington, and the left. The reason they didn't "win" in the sense that they conquered the US is that they had signed an agreement after we won the Revolutionary War which stated that they would not attempt to infringe upon the territories of or reclaim any parts of the new United States. If memory serves, it was a trade-off for the US promising not to claim the land of persons who had supported the crown during the Rev. War, and to allow them to live unmolested, should they have wished to stay in the new US.

But the British mail objective during 1812 was to come over and teach the new nation the lesson of "Don't mess with our trade routes or we'll come kick your 'arses'" which, honestly, they succeeded at. Then they left, and we didn't mess with British trade anymore. So, in a way, they did win, because we were beat.

Edit: At least the eastern continental US was. Good point, we did manage to take parts of Canada, but we still got kicked out of Quebec when we tried to take it (several times). Honestly, the war was more of a stalemate. but if you're going by "who did more damage" it was undoubtedly the British.

I would not brag if I were Canadian since much of Ontario was captured by the United States during the war of 1812; the Canadian territory was returned to Britain under the Treaty of Ghent.

Territory was not the only thing. Prior to the war the British Navy used to impress American sailors into the Royal Navy by force; the Brits were forced to stop this practice. After the Treaty of Ghent the United Kingdom never again messed with the United States Navy or its merchant sailors.

The problem with the American version of the war of 1812 is that most of

it was rewritten later on in the 19th century the British won the war not

by direct military action but by its naval blockade which apart from

American merchant ships which sailed from New England ports with

supplies for the British Army in Spain stopped American trade and

made the country bankrupt. One of the reasons the blockade was very

effective was the RN ships got a lot of their supplies from American

ports in return of not attacking them which meant they could remain

    off the coast longer.

    I don't really give a **** who won the war of 1812.

But it was America's goal to invade Canada(then a British Colony) and make the whole of North America a part of the United States. I guess Canadian Provinces would of become American States.

But clearly America failed to achieve this goal, because if it did achieve it, then Canada wouldn't exist.
