Pell Grant Cuts Have Excluded Me from College?

I just learned the beginning of July that my Pell Grants were cut. I'm shocked. I was only 4 classes shy of graduating with a BA degree. I had changed majors some time ago from voice studies to creative writing because of of asthma, and as a non-traditional student I only took courses part time because I was the sole care provider for my father (a disabled american veteran) and my mother -both of whose health was declining and who I lost in 2008, tragically just 6 months apart. As a single mother whose father left us to remarry for his 4th time, I was also there to raise my son. All this while trying to work. I dont know what their excuse is for this. It hurts the poor and middle class who were struggling to make a better life for themselves through education. I have exhausted my loans and I will not pile on more debt with private loans-- I was late applying for my PHEEAA grant (not sure how I missed the deadline on that), and I didnt apply for Scholarships because I thought I had enough aid from other sources. (I have a 3.5 gpa). Additionally, my college cant afford me an SEOG grant because of funding cuts. How am I supposed to go to college on a limited income - it will take me 1,100 dollars out of pocket PER CLASS to graduate. I just cant do it even on a payment plan -- I cant manage 265 dollars a month to pay my college. Please tell me someone has some ideas/suggestions.

Update:

BTW I am not a career student -- not when considering all the struggles and difficulties I've had to endure. I work part-time and jobs ARE SCARCE. Even the Mcdonalds/Burger king ones. So dont tell me to get a job -- I'm in a retraining program due to disability.

You are a career student, because you changed majors and used up your eligible funding. That is the sign of a career student.

Your struggles you're whining about are of your own making and of your own doing.

If you knew.. about a year ago when the government was running out of money.... then you should have also been aware of the cuts to Pell Grant & other federal funding (FSEOG as an example)

there was lots of info about this.... even on Yahoo Answers there were many questions about this

my point is this... if you paid any attention at all.... then you would have known that you were at risk for funding cuts

with this in mind, you had almost a year to address this issue (adding hours at work, getting a second job, applying for all available scholarships, etc....)

then to say you just learned in the beginning of July.... when you have been in school for long enough to be so close to your bachelors..... tells me you really don't pay attention to the things you need to do..... or you procrastinate

Most people who have any college education have learned that they need to fill out FAFSA early in the year... typically, it is recommended to complete taxes early so you can filll out FAFSA by the end of February at the latest

Many Unis have Financial Aid deadlines in Feb or early March

Most states also have deadlines in Feb or early March

You act like you don't know the school's excuse for your funding being reduced...... going back to my first point... it was a government budget cut because the US was running out of money

If you only need 4 classes.... then the most logical thing for you to do is to increase work hours to pay out-of-pocket or through the payment plan... an additional 15 hours per week at minimum wage should get you the amount you need for the payment plan or take a private student loan so you can complete your degree ----- apx $5,000 - $6,000 in private student loans won't be that big of a deal if you already are in enough debt to have hit aggregate loan ceiling (I would have never recommended your debt early on... but given your choice to be in heavy debt...)

You will have to figure something out fast.... if you are not enrolled in at least 6 credit hours, then your existing student loans will become due 6 months from the date of your last class

I am sorry for your family trouble... the loss of your parents must have been incredibly difficult. I hate to say it, but it is obvious that your choice of parent for your child was obviously not a very good choice (I know... neither was my choice of parent in the biological father for my son)

now...... another consideration.... you are only 4 classes (one-two semester) away from your bachelors degree....... what are your current job opportunities upon gradution? where have you applied... what work do you plan to be doing so that you can re-pay the student loans you have (with or without the additional loan to get these last few classes)

there is plenty incorrect right here. one million. many of the technical jobs do no longer require college levels. Electricians, device technicians and those varieties of people often have not got college levels, yet attend commerce college and do o.k.. further, as a count of fact, they shouldn't even would desire to attend commerce college. those fields used to evaluate in extreme college yet, for some reason isn't to any extent further. 2. i'm working finished time and not in basic terms have been given a grasp's degree, yet am now pursuing a PhD. Please, tell me returned the way it can not be accomplished. Does it take longer? some situations. yet so what? 3. once you're paying $30,000 a 12 months, you're doing it incorrect. pass to a junior college for a pair of years and then pass the final couple of years to the '4' 12 months college. pass to one close to to abode so which you do not have the 'room and board'. nonetheless, in spite of in case you do and are paying $30,000, you're taking the costlier decision. a solid college degree would properly be had for plenty much less. 4. We pay for 12 years of school. How plenty extra of YOUR existence to you opt for ME to pay for? ultimately, there's an on the spot correlation between the money pumped into colleges via the government and the cost of a school education. colleges will by no ability say no to money and whilst the government asks, "do you opt for extra?" properly, valuable! as long as human beings are prepared to pay $30,000 for a 12 months of faculty, colleges would be chuffed to cost you that for it.

you either have used up your eligibility to receive the Pell Grant, and you would have no one to blame but yourself because you chose to change majors - or you make too much money to be eligible to receive it, and it's because it's "needs based" and not just free money for everyone.

I don't know what makes you think a college education is supposed to be free.

and the only way to have "exhausted your loans" is because you've been in college for far too long and are abusing the financial aid system because you're a career student.

to be brutally honest, it's a little irresponsible to think that society is supposed to pay for you to go to school when you have other responsibility that should take priority.

it's not the government's or taxpayer's responsibility you have asthma.

it's not the government's or taxpayer's responsibility that you chose the wrong major.

it's not the government's or taxpayer's responsibility that you chose to take care of your father.

it's not the government's or taxpayer's responsibility that you got divorced.

it's not the government's or taxpayer's responsibility that you have a son.

    get a job.

You make too much money for the Pell Grant...you will have to take out private loans or save the money to pay out of pocket.
