I understand how frustrating this may be! I have a lot of people come to me with this same problem. I can tell you from a nutritionists point of view, that there are a couple things you can do to help. First, the baby is over a year so I am assuming he is drinking whole milk (ideally). You must limit the amount of milk he drinks/day to no more than 16 oz/d. To some people that sounds very little compared to what they used to drink. But drinking too much milk will constipate the baby and make it hard for him to go to the bathroom. Try changing his diet, increase fruits and vegetables and lots of fluids like water. Keep him active, activities help move things inside and this can make it easier for him to go. Things like prune juice or dried prunes can help. As bad as it sounds, warm water first thing in the morning can also help. Talk to your doctor about offering him castor oil.
I hope this helps!!!

My 8 month old does that sometimes, too. Try hydrating him more. Giving him more fiber can make the problem worse. Give him a lot of water. If he's having very hard stools, ask the doctor about gentle laxatives you can try. I forget the name of the one my doctor suggested for when my son gets constipated. I don't know if they have a baby version of Preperation H, but that really helps me.

Prune, pear, white grape, grapefruit, pineapple and even citrus fruit juices have their laxative advocates. Try every one until you find something that works.
Water may help too.
And baby glycerine suppositories - if there's no other way to ensure he's doing a daily do.

We had the same problem for years with our son. Try pear juice. Its hard to find, so you may have to buy canned pears, be sure its not packaged in syrup, but the juice from it. give him as much as he wants until his stool softens. Then go to two servings a day from there and adjust accordingly to his needs. Hope this helps the little guy. This worked wonderfully for my little one.
