Is there an effort in the psych community to find a way to screen people...?

to find potentially dangerous people? Like the two boys in Colorado who shot up their school and the Neuro PHD student who just shot up people in a theater. Possibly we could encourage people to report to the psych community when they see key symptoms in their friends.

As far as I know there is no effort to screen people, but even if we could there is always bound to be the stray; a machine malfunction, person checks out fine but isn't, person who gets the idea after the screening, etc.

Also, I'm imagining my friend saying 'Harr, you are closed off, like punching things, and break pencils often. Go get a screening in case you end up shooting someone and harming society'. I wouldn't like that, would you? :)
