Hi. I believe the teacher will assign him the textbook that will be used in class, or it will be provided for him. Instead of wasting money in something the kid might not even use, you can have him read his notes, study from what was given in class, and then practice with him, with your guidance, through internet worksheets, games, activities, and so on..As a parent you don't even need to master chemistry because most of these sites provide sheets with the answer. Your district has to pay for the online version. Then you get a password to use.
