You can't change the real players name. You can only change created players name.

Go to roster and edit player, then keep scrolling left or right until you see the players name.
It only works for created players not the NBA players.

Manage Roster and choose the player. Then mash A if it's on Xbox 360, and there'll be something like Edit Player, mash that and the attributes and everything will come up.
