My car is having a rough start, and rough idling?

Question

I have an 01' saab, and it was running fine til I blew the belt a few months ago. This caused the coolant to explode and evaporate, and ever since I have had a check engine light stuck on. My mechanic says he cant do anything, but I find that a little bullshit since I've seen multiple possibilities as to what it could be. The engine randomly shuts off sometimes when I slow down or come to a stop, and when this happens there are 3 red lights(battery, oil, and the triangle thing) which come on. I can restart the car fine, but usually it's shaking a lot and the RPM's do a lot of stuttering on their own. I have no clue what's wrong, but it's incredibly irritating. I also should mention that whenever I gas the car it stops shaking sometimes, but once in a blue moon it will run fine and act perfect. Any suggestions I would love you for life =D

Idk if this is how I respond to you directly? Sounds good, I was thinking it might be the air system and another mechanic was mentioning how the check engine light was coming up with an error code for MAF (mass air flow). Also he said it sounded like it might be misfiring.

your mechanic see's a black hole,,he doesnt want to fall into it..
1  01 saab,,my guess is its aluminum heads and maybe block too,,overheating even for 5 min can warp heads,,,so get a compression test and a "leak down" test,,,maybe new head gasket will fix but once its apart you could see tha black hole,,could need a new/rebuilt/used engine
2 check all vacuum hoses and intake gasket
3 dare i assUme its tuned up...plugs,,,wires,,,all ignision componits,,fuel filter
