I am going to go with Enrico Fermi, the first scientist to split the atom and lead us into nuclear energy.
First because it must take some level of genius to come up with the idea that man could split something that isn't even visible to the naked eye. Something so tiny and relatively unknown, he wondered if he could break it apart and perhaps use the subsequent energy release.
Second because I was in the nuclear department in the U.S. Navy aboard a submarine. Here is a submarine about the length of a football field powered by a nuclear reactor. All self contained, even me being 20-30 feet away from a reactor, I got less exposure to radiation than people did out in the world from the sun, milk, x-rays, etc. How amazing is that? Now Fermi didn't put all that together but Admiral Rickover did.
So I'll add another incredible mind to my answer, Admiral Hymen Rickover. He basically designed the nuclear submarine.

Newton - I'd like to know how he wrote Principia Mathematica in only 18 months. It would have taken a team of mathematicians and physicists decades.
