Can Microsoft Excel files be made to identify whoever opens it?

I'm wondering if anyone knows if it's possible for people to somehow put something in an Excel file in order to track who opens it, identifying them via IP or something similar. Is it possible with macros or anything excluding trojans?

Unless you open an Excel file with macros. Sometimes the document properties tells you who is the original creator so make sure you remove that to hide your identity.
