Best book about the Crusades?
Does anybody have recommendations for the best book on the Crusades? I started reading Holy Warriors by Johnathan Phillips, but it's a shallow read without the kind of detail I want. At the same time, I don't want to read something too academic and long like God's War like Christopher Tyerman. Thomas Asbridge looks a little academic for my taste too, but apparently he's a good writer. I actually would prefer something that reads like a novel with serious research and analysis along with good character studies as well. I'm looking mostly into the Dream and the Tomb by Roberty Payne right now.

You thought 'Holy Warriors' was shallow? I thought it was an outstanding piece of work. Best one-volume overview I've ever come across.
Okay, then... my first port-of-call for any military-themed history subject is always Osprey publishing.
Try 'The Crusades' by David Nicolle, from the Osprey 'Essential History' series for an overview, or 'The Crusades' from the Osprey 'Elite' series, by David Nicolle & Richard Hook, which concentrates on the military forces involved.
If you want more detail, the 'Campaign' series has books on the individual Crusades, and the 'Men-at-Arms' and 'Warrior' series have volumes on specific forces, such as the armies of Outremer, the Military Orders, etc.
They're well laid out, superbly illustrated, and have a format that's easy to 'dip into'.

I'd check Amazon (or whatever) before buying though - you can usually find them on offer cheaper than buying direct from Osprey.
Hope that helps!

My answer won't be any good, but the Crusades trilogy by Jan Guillou is pretty good. Of course, I liked it because it centered around a Swede named Arn, and I am into the whole Norse/Nordic/Scandinavian genres. They aren't "books about the Crusades" unfortunately.
Sorry if my answer was a let-down and completely worthless. >v>;;
Though a book about the Northern or Prussian Crusades (specifically) might be fascinating.
"The Prussian Crusade" looks interesting, as does "The Northern Crusades".
Anyway, I hope someone can give you a better answer than I did. :)
