Is the Bulgarian language similar to Russian?
I am an American. This Summer I am working with many young Bulgarian people (who speak English). I know a little Russian. If I attempt to talk to them with some simple Russian phrases will I be understood? I don't want to make too much of a fool of myself ( :

Both Bulgarian and Russian are Slavic languages, but during its history Bulgarian underwent a quite different evolution than Russian. Consequently, modern Bulgarian is about as far from Russian as Dutch is from German.
A few good collections of useful Bulgarian phrases :

Hungarian is an excessively unusual language, which means it does not resemble to another language. It's belongs to the Uralic language loved ones and Bulgarian - Slavic Language, hence there are as distinct as chalk and cheese. I doubt you might uncover 2 phrases which are the identical in each languages. If a Bulgarian man or woman instructed you that, it was once a shaggy dog story, you most often did not comprehend it.

As other people have already pointed out, they are similar but I do not see much point in talking to them in Russian because, after all, they are not Russians and they might not understand you (especially if your accent is strong), you can try with some Bulgarian phrases instead, they will be more impressed :)

I'm Bulgarian, and it's VERY similar, but i still don't really understand it.. sadface :(
But then again I've only lived there 7 years, and my mom and dad slightly understand it, so i think they would get it.
They might think "haha this fker thinks we're russian rofl" but that's the worst that could happen.

yes, they are both slavic languages, but still different... so why confuse them with "some simple Russian phrases" when you all can speak english? it's like if you would work with Spaniards and will talk to them in french...

Yes, very much so. But it also shows an odd slight relation (based on words) to Armenian.
Russian word for "I" = "Ya"
Bulgarian word for "I" = "Az"
Armenian word for "I" = "Yes"

Yes, it is a Baltic language and they are similar. Although I would say Bulgarian is less thicker than Russian.
