Michael Phelps vs. Ryan Lochte?
Who do you think is better? Not just in terms of athletics, but personality, lifestyle, etc...
Personally, I've got a preference for Phelps. Lochte may beat Michael Phelps in every event in London, but it wont matter. At the end of the day, Phelps's name will be the one who people will remember, whose name will be put in the history books... the guy set records, made history, became a legend. Lochte will never, can never, reach that level. Roger Bannister was the first man to run a sub-four minute mile. Since then dozens of men have beat him, but none of them have mattered as much as he did. Athletics aside, Lochte has proven to be an arrogant jerk; He bashes on teammates, makes excuses for not doing as well as he said he would, and talks about how happy he is to have "unthroned" Michael Phelps... who is his teammate and fellow American! Ryan Lochte is generally considered to be more attractive than Michael Phelps who had, admittedly, goofy looks, but I still think Michael is cuter <3
The thing that Lochte has going for him is anger and resentment. Phelps has been in the spotlight for *years* and Lochte hasn't had any of that glory even if he contributed a lot to Michael Phelps's success (relays). Anger and jealousy are really powerful tools, but once you win just a little bit they disappear completely.
I actually know quite a bit about swimming, silly goose. I'm on my high school's varsity swim team (freestyle all the way :D!), my father was on his school's team and later was a high school swimming coach... he's been teaching me to swim since I was old enough to hold my head up on my own (obviously I dont remember this but according to home videos thats how it was haha).
Sadly I can admit that Michael Phelps is a total momma's boy :-/
Even more of a reason why i like Phelps... Lochte's been around for the same amount of time and hasnt reached Phelps's level until the past few years, when Michael lost focus and became a jerk for a couple of years.
I never claimed Phelps wasnt arrogant, but hes gotten a good dose of humility since the 2009 World Championships.

Rossi04 lochte can beat phelps at every event? So what happened in the 200m IM
I like them both as swimmers they are very talented and are role models to me. I for some reason don't like lochtes attitude though.

Well I have a lot of respect for both of them, Phelps will always be my role model in my swimming just because he has a wonderful personality and is the most decorated Olympian, so he has my respect and admiration. However Lochte has been my favourite the last three years just because of how much he trained for this, he didn't have the same natural talent Phelps does and so he trained harder than any other swimmer. That is what really makes him stand out to me personally, because I don't have the natural talent to finish 1st in every meet I go to but I've been working a lot harder this year because of his inspiration and dropped 4 seconds off my 200 fly in the last meet.

Lochte can beat phelps in every event he is racing in the Olympics again and can set more world records and get more medals he still has plenty of time to be better than phelps. And the people that ran a sub four mile some of them are known especially the one that holds the record today. When lochte retires I bet he will be bigger than phelps. And I bet he won't do drugs either

i love how people who ask this know nothing about swimming and say how lochtes arrogant when the truth is that hes one of the most liked swimmers among the swimming world and fans.
people act like this is his 1st olympics and is this new comer. hes older than phelps and has been in the 2004 and 2008 olympics and im pretty sure has 3 golds before this olympics even started. plus hes the one thats put in the work because he was always overshadowed by phelps and decided this year he would put in the worked and is one of the hardest working athletes in the sport.

phelps all the way! he has been my role model in swimming for 6 years! i just havent gravitated toward lochte like i did with phelps! no matter what happens with michael i stand by him 100%!

Michael Phelps.
He created a record by winning 19 medals. I think this more than enough for a athlete.

Micheal Phelps is a dick. He used to show up to meets in Southern MI/Ohio and would isolate himself from everyone. He'd go up to the top of the 10 meter so he wouldn't be bothered by these 12 year olds that worship him.
Everyone in the swimming community in Michigan hates him. He walked to U of Ms pool and said "get the touch pads and blocks out, I'm gunna break all these records".
He is the least humble guy you'll ever meet. And a total momma's boy.
Everyone thinks he's so great for winning 8 golds.. but he owes a ton of it to his team mates. And also, if you win the 200 fly, you should win the 100 fly. There's no way in hell he would've won the backstroke or breast stroke at the Olympics... so to say the best all around swimmer... hardly. It's easy when you do the same event twice.... you shouldn't lose if you win the first one...
He did the 100 fly, 200 Fly, 200 IM, 400 IM and the 200 free in 2008... he did three events....
