How do you keep ants from getting into humming bird feeders?

I have metal poles with hangers on them but the ants keep taking over the feeders. I tried cooking grease but that just hardened. I don't want to use any pestiside on the ground or poles. Any good advice? Thank you!

    Howdy Thomas,

I used vaseline for years and it does the trick. However it collects dust in a few weeks it has to be done again. Vicks vapor rub is another that works even better. The part that I like is that it last much longer.

You can use pesticide sprays on the poles which will be almost undetectable to you when it drys.

Well, ..., I pesticide on a paper towel and wipe it around the lower part of the pole. It works petty well and doesn't harm the humming birds.

Cucumbers. It's cheap and it won't harm the humming birds. I guess rub it around the pole or put in around the pole.

this thing..... got two of them for my feeders this spring... not ONE ANT has bothered my feeders since hanging them!!!.... and there's no harm to the birds, and I don't have to watch the level of water in a moat in this heat!!!!... I'll buy these every year... they use a cake of pyrethrin insecticide at the top of the bell..... great stuff.... wish they'd package it to use in the house somehow!!!....

Instead of cooking grease, which will congeal, use a petroleum based lubricant. Vaseline, wheel bearing grease, gear lube, whatever. You can wipe it off now and then & reapply.

i read somewhere that if you put salt around the outside of your house it will help keep the ants away... i dont kow if thats true or not because i would think ants would go after it... but maybe try putting a little salt around it :)
